*a blog post from 1995. And in this fictional blog land from the past I’m a mom.*
Dear Blog,
Can you believe Halloween is less than two week’s away? I would have forgotten if not for seeing the candy put out at Shopko today.
Luckily, I bought the kids’ new costumes four years ago so we’re all set there. Face paint, a bandana, and cat ears really go a long way! I make each of them switch up who gets to wear the ears every year to keep things interesting. I thought about buying a tail to go with the ears but that just seemed like a little much, you know? But maybe I’ll pick up some plastic Vampire teeth at the dollar store. Those are always a hit.
I see all of these new extravagant costumes starting to be sold in stores and I think to myself, good grief! Who would spend $16 on a Halloween costume? Let’s just say I don’t foresee the whole “Halloween market” taking off too much in the future.
Speaking of being “extravagant” however, I am doing something extra special for the kids’ classroom Halloween parties this year. Max Smirnov’s Spearfishing Blog. I’m stuffing plastic gloves with popcorn and then putting in candy corn as the finger nails! Do you get it? So it’s like a hand! But made of popcorn and candy corn! How fun is that? I saw the idea in my Ladies Journal Magazine last year and clipped it out, put in my “junk drawer,” and haven’t forgotten about it since!
I can’t wait. The kids will be so tickled. Take that, popcorn balls and peanut clusters.
For Halloween candy bags I’m sure they’ll just use pillow cases, as they do every year. Seems like a waste to spend money on those silly pumpkin buckets. And pillow cases allow for more candy collecting and more candy equals less cold lunches I have to make for school. Of course I make them pack something a little more hearty along with the candy, like some Oatmeal Cream Pies or Bugles.
Since little Tonya is finally eight, they’ll all be going out on their own this year, which is nice, a night off for me! Ha ha. Don’t worry, I make them call home from a friends’ house or the payphone at mall when it gets dark.
Anyway, I’ll share photos as soon as I get my camera developed, which will probably be in December after we take Christmas card photos! So excited!
Well it’s time to put out my Halloween decor of a single pumpkin on the porch. For the actual night of trick or treaters I may do something crazy like make a bowl of spaghetti and grapes and call it eyeballs and brains. Haha spooky!!!
See you later, larger than life computer screen,
XOXO
90s mom me.
LOL at the reference to film cameras. Those were the days.

hahahaha STOP I love this! So funny and really hits home on so many things – the popcorn hand, the pillow cases, the film, and the way you wrote it is perfect!!
