We Tried To Paint Our Pup

It was a good idea in theory.

Paints. Pups. And Pints.

Pay $60 and you get a blank canvas, a couple of beers, and instruction on how to paint your pup. And if you pay extra, a portion goes back to the pups (which of course we did, because hello save the pups!)

It should come as no surprise to anyone that I was very excited to do this. My dream house = a house covered in painted images of Harlow. Can you imagine? I would die.

It was hard a decision, but I finally chose the two perfect photos of Harlow for Chris and I to paint.

This first photo shows Harlow’s fun playful side.

This second one shows his sassy pretentious side.

They were going to be great. I already told Chris I would rearrange our gallery wall to make room for our masterpieces.

We’ve done a paint/wine class before and were quite pleased with how easy it was to pretend to be an artist- that is when you’ve got an instructor who outlines your entire photo complete with a “paint by numbers” map clearly laid out for you.

Unfortunately paint, pups and pints was a different story.

We were given a blank canvas. And that was it. The instructor was actually just a bartender who walked around and said things like “shade more” and “blend right there” and “want another drink?”

And so after one too many drinks, one too many screw-ups, and me finally just getting frustrated and saying forget this time after time, our “masterpieces” turned out like this.

It was a disappointment to say the least. Harlow was not impressed. Not impressed one bit.

The saddest part is that we actually tried. Chris is so mad in this pic.

Serious question, who’s painting is worse?

I commissioned a (expensive) watercolor of my sister's cats for her birthday present last year, I'm thinking this will work for Christmas this year 🙂

Oh my goodness, thank you for providing chuckles during a mind-numbing work meeting (despite the stares I got). I LOVE Harlow's crossed paws, in both the photo and the painting interpretation.

AHA we have paint the pups here but they screen print the picture on there as a outline!

lololol this is hilarious. I think yours wins for being worst. I've been in that same position, but instead of beer, it was a bottle of wine.

Haha this is so awesome. If I showed up and realized I would have no guidance I would probably just quit lol. Like did anyone do well? I think these are so great though and such a funny story. You should totally still hang them up on your gallery wall. I bet Harlow loves them.

lol I love this! Thank you for the laugh! Honesty, it's too hard to choose the best. 🙂 You did better than I could do! I am sure Harlow will love them!

My picture I painted of my dog turned out great, but I drank no alcohol while I painted. AND the instructor drew him for me and was an actual artist. I hope you try it again and find someone who will teach you how to paint! In the meantime, it's a hilarious story!!! I want to know, too: did anyone do well?

I would've been so disappointed if that happened! I would love to have a painted picture of my own fur baby, but I would need some serious help in getting started because I'm definitely not that artistic!

I just LOVE this!! hahahaha painting is hard!! BTW.. there is an app called waterlogue that is pretty awesome.. turns photos into a watercolor! It looks easier than actually painting!! 😉

Am I the only one who thinks that Chris' painting is WAY worse? I can't stop laughing.

Hahaha oh my gosh Chris' face in that last pic!

  17. September 2, 2015 / 9:42 am

Oh my…funny story, that's for sure! However, you both did better than I probably would have so kudos to you. 🙂

Sounds like you had a fun/interesting time! The wine definitely helps in those painting classes… at least with your feelings about the paintings 🙂 I haven't done the paint your pet one, but the studio near me will sketch the image out so you just paint it!

I can't stop laughing. This is the best! I used to work at a paint your own pottery shop and we had one customer that would always sign his wife's name on what he painted when he didn't like it, maybe you can do that and pass it off that way.
