There are two types of people in this world. Those that do karaoke and those that do not. I happen to fall into the “do not” category. That is until last night when I went out with some friends to celebrate Adrienne and Ethan’s 25th birthdays.
What you see above is a photo of me making my debut karaoke appearance. And what song did I choose to sing? My favorite party song, What’s New Pussycat by Tom Jones. A classic. I can tell by my hand I’m probably singing the lyric about big pussycat eyes. Followed by the lyric about big pussycat lips.
Here’s a fun tip- if you’re doing karaoke for the first time, google the lyrics to the song you’re about to choose before you get on stage and find yourself singing about big pussycat lips in front of a crowd of people.
What I failed to mention is that everyone I was karaoking with are incredibly talented singers. They’re theaterfolk. After about the 7th show tune I didn’t recognize I realized I was the only poor fool in the room that didn’t study musical theater in college. And then I also realized why I’ve never been invited on their karaoke nights before… They don’t mess around.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from studying improv and comedy, it’s that you’ve got to go hard or go home. If you feel stupid on stage then you look stupid on stage. So damnit, I got up there and sang about pussycats with all my heart. I belted out my terrible singing voice for all to hear. And I lived.
But sadly I wasn’t nearly as entertaining as my friends on stage. Here’s a few photos of how the good ones do it.
I get the pleasure of performing with these wonderful people on Sunday at Sketchfest and I am so very excited. We’ll be on at 5 p.m. in the Thrust Theater at Stage 773. You should probably come. Our show is very weird.
Now go take on your day.
XOXO

LOVE karaoke with theatre folk. Mainly because its not all Taylor Swift (don't get me wrong, I like her and all… but seriously…)
I'm also one to not voluntarily get up on stage and sing my heart out! So kudos to you for doing it! Looks like a lot of fun 🙂
I avoid karaoke like the plague generally. haha
Hahaha, I'm actually a decent singer but I would be terrified of Karaoke! I also have no idea what the words to "What's New Pussycat" are, other than "What's New Pussycat".
You did great! You are a much cooler person than me… Maybe I can join the ranks of the cool kids that sing at karaoke!
I fall in the do not category as well, and I sang karaoke last year and I have never done it since and I do not plan on ever doing it again.
haha looked like a lot of fun, I fall in the do not category, I just hate being center of attention. Just terrified of it.
I don't think all the drinks in the world could get me up there, but it sounds fun!
It looks like you guys had a blast though!
Bahaha those lyrics! That's quite the debut. I've never done karaoke and I actually am a singer. I don't know what it is about the karaoke stage that intimidates me. I think I just need to break the ice and then you probably couldn't get me off stage. Maybe one day the right timing and the right amount of wine will collide!
I love karaoke but I don't do it very often. My go-to is Madonna.
Gotta love some karaoke. After consuming the entire stash behind the bar…
Michael has never karaoke-d and now that it's been so long he's pretty much refused it. maybe I need to send him this post.
I can only imagine you doing karaoke, Taylor! A word from an experienced karaoker: You ALWAYS go big or go home. Belt louder, hold it out longer, and do it all just a little bit more oomph-ish than normal. Especially when the crowd has a few (or ten) drinks down the hatch already, you'll be basically Ariana Grande and they won't even know what hit them.

And I took your advice of old and started VLOGGING! Oh, happy day.

I've done karaoke once.. and it was with my Dad when I was 17 in the back of a taxi cap when we were visiting Toronto. A legit taxi cab/karaoke bar complete with disco balls and twinkly light galore. We sang Take Me Home, Country Roads and meant every damn word.
My family does karaoke every year on Christmas morning, it is a hilarious mess of terrible singers, but a blast!
I am one of those hardcore karaoke singers, I can't help it, I've been singing since I was 2! I will HAVE to come and see you perform someday!
Karaoke is fun! but its better done a few drinks in! You look like you had a blast.
Um. You do stand up comedy but now karaoke?!
Also, I love rock n roll is THEE most epic karaoke song.
I cringe at the thought of having to do karaoke.
I love karaoke!! I'm one of those people who sing and don't care how I look hahaha. I gotta do karaoke soon!! 🙂 Glad you had fun with your friends!
Hi there! Been a lurker for awhile now.
I don't think I've done karaoke but Lord, when the family is together, we always do "Just Dance" or "Country Dance"…thank God none of us film it LOL!
But I like your attitude about it! I'm the same way….if I can't nail it, I'm going to have fun with it!
So fun! I'm all over karoke as long as the room is full and loud! One solo Joe in the corner makes it all go weird. Ha! Xo Tammy

Oof, Karaoke. I've made a couple of karaoke mistakes, and I won't be performing again. Combine my not-so-great singing voice with a lack of confidence and it's an all-around pitiful performance. Proud of myself for trying it. But never again.
Actually – quick elaboration. The first time I ever did it, I thought, "I know all the words to ___ Destiny's Child song. I'll do that!" But I totally forgot about all the wordless crooning they do. So when the screen displayed "Oooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh" I had no idea what to do and just stood there stupidly. The DJ even tried to help me out, but it was bad. Lol! And funny now, but not at the time.
I have done karaoke a few times at various venues, but never at a bar or pub. I hear that it is a "popular drunk" activity, but I enjoy it sober. I don't really get stage fright since I have the lyrics right in front of me.
hahaha My husband and I used to go to karaoke nights with my friends all the time. They would all sing and I would not. I am way too shy to even give it a try. I would probably pass out. But half of my friends are musical theater people so they have amazing voices and my husband was the lead singer in a band for years so he's obviously good…me, not so much. haha! Good for you for being so brave tho! You are awesome!
Oh I LOVE karaoke! I'm not an excellent singer but I try not to let it stop me. Some of my best performances include songs by sir mix-a-lot and Shania Twain. Variety is key if your ever decide to try again.
I always said I'd never do it. One night I got really drunk and rapped Baby Got Back with 2 other people. Go big or go home!
Nice one! You are very brave!!!
I am pleased to know about this music event. I am also a member of a local music band and lately have been to several wedding venues NYC. We have got so many requests for organizing a music concert that seriously thinking about it now.
