Let’s Save The Dogs

It always just starts with one article.

I’ll see a post on Facebook or Twitter with a pic of a sad pup or a terrible sounding headline and even though I know I shouldn’t click on it, I do. I always do. And then I find another article. And another. And before I know it I’m about ten sad dog articles in, feeling like absolute hell thinking I’m completely help less.

Facebook dog groups do it to me, as well. My feed is now just a big stream of shelters across the country trying to find homes for dogs. Do you follow Susie’s Senior Dogs? You should. I could spend all day reading about her success stories… And then there’s this Nebraska group I follow from the town I grew up in. It’s usually quite amusing, it’s full of people giving away “normal” stuff like old underwear, half used lotion, and glitter jeans, you know the regular. But then there’s also a new dog on there every day someone is trying to pawn off. And that shit drives me insane. “We just can’t keep him anymore…He needs to go.” No maam, you need to go. Who are these people who just think of their animals as disposable items? You might not consider your dog a family member but sadly that’s most definitely how he thinks of you. How can you just decide “he needs to go?” I could rant about this for days.

Like I said, I might have a problem.

The other day I was with Harlow at Home Depot (he’s a bit of a carpenter so he loves this place) and I spotted another woman with a dog that I thought I recognized. As she walked closer it dawned on me how I knew her, I watched her dog get hit by a car last summer and drove both of them to the hospital as he lie in her lap dying in my passenger side. But he didn’t die! Here he was at Home Depot bouncing around like any other healthy black lab. I’m embarrassed to admit how excited I was to see him doing okay because I never really knew.

As soon as the owner saw me she rushed over and introduced herself and told me it was a long recovery for her dog and he almost didn’t make it, but he did. And he’s as happy and healthy as ever. She was too.

I liked the feeling of thinking that I actually helped a dog, rather than just self loathing and simply feeling sorry for dogs. So a few weeks ago I told Chris that I’m going to do something different this year. Instead of just being sorry for dogs, which in all honesty does no good, I’m going to do something about it. Albeit, something small, but hopefully it will help never the less.

So that’s why I’m bringing you this shirt.

For every shirt sold, 20% goes to an animal shelter here in Chicago.

You can place your order by clicking here

I say for 2015 we see more success stories about dogs than sad stories, what do you think?

Thanks for listening to another one of my crazy dog lady posts, you know there’s always more where this came from.

I love this! I am also addicted to following rescue pages on Facebook. I follow dog rescues and horse rescues and every time one doesn't get adopted it breaks my heart. Thank you for doing something to help the dogs. You are an amazing person.

This is amazing! I really love that you saw the lady and her dog at Home Depot! I remember your post last summer about them! I swore I wouldn't buy anything from blogs this year, but I really love the shirt and saving dogs so I will probably break down later today and purchase one 🙂

yes yes yes yes. This is seriously great. THANK YOU (and for the cat hoodie. I get so much "crazy cat lady" teasing from my friends and this will only exacerbate it. Cannot wait.)

You have such a great heart and honestly this is why I find you to be one of the most refreshing bloggers out there. Thanks for all you do.

OMG I need this shirt!!! Just this morning I had to unfollow this dog group I follow on Facebook because it has been blowing up my newsfeed and I literally cannot sleep at night with some of these sad stories and dogs that need new homes for whatever lame reason there is to accompany it. I hate it!!! Are you subscribed to Scout at Barkbox? I get daily emails from them with the cutest stories that don't leave me feeling quite upset.

This is such a good cause!! Whilst working with a local vets, the first emergency case I ever witnessed was a dog rushed in after it had been run over. It was a great pleasure of mine to watch his recovery and his first ever steps since the accident. This is such a great post. 🙂 x

Today is actually the 5 year adopt-a-versary of my dog. (Yes, I do know these things) I even have a picture about it on Instagram. I might have to order this t-shirt in honor of the day.

Love this! Totally buying one. I've been fostering a dog that went to her – supposed – forever home, and 2 days later they're returning her because she isn't perfect on a leash. But I'm determined to make her story a happy one!

  17. January 27, 2015 / 9:51 pm

Ahhhhh. They already sold out 🙁 Is is because I made a comment about wanting a shirt that just says beer + pizza??? Let me know if you do anymore.

  18. January 27, 2015 / 9:59 pm

This is awesome! I'm so glad you came up with a cool idea to help support your local shelter! I'm currently working as a dog caregiver at Best Friend's Animal Sanctuary… You should come out and volunteer sometime! I swear you would love it and definitely helps with the helplessness that comes from getting into animal rescue.

  19. January 27, 2015 / 11:45 pm

I absolutely love this!! Animal shelters are truly soo important!

  20. January 28, 2015 / 12:05 am

Seriously speaking to my heart, dogs are my weakness. I can't stand people that just dispose of animals and could go on similar rants for days and days. The place I've recently moved treats dogs horrifically than anything I've ever personally experienced. I seriously cried so much at what I saw and also vowed I needed to do more than be sad/pissed off/blubbery dog loving mess. So happy that you're taking a step forward to help too! Thank you! (Wish I was quick enough to jump on purchasing!)

they are sold out already!! I would love that style for I Rather Be With My Cat! I wish i had a puppy too, but I live in a city and i'd feel bad couping a pup up in my tiny apartment all day!!

    Love these!

  22. January 28, 2015 / 2:19 pm

This is such a great idea! I can't stand how people don't think of their dogs as family! I have a 2-year old Pointer, and I recently decided to foster a little Beagle/Boxer mix until she found a home. Lo and behold, it's been two weeks and I can't imagine parting with the little girl. So, it looks like I'm keeping her! In an attempt to keep from becoming known as a "crazy dog lady", I'm going to try my best to resist adopting a third one. Easier said than done.

  23. January 29, 2015 / 8:22 pm

Love the shirt! You go girl!

  24. January 30, 2015 / 9:14 am

I'm not going to lie, I cried reading this. The shelters in the South really are the worse. They are so overcrowded, and it just breaks my heart into a million pieces. I do love that shirt and the cause it benefits. I know they are sold out now, but are you going to be selling more of them anytime soon?

  25. February 4, 2015 / 12:54 am

I love the shirt! Will be ordering as soon as someone from our office is in the USA. Shipping to South Africa will cost the same as the shirt
