The Day the River Turned Green

On Saturday morning the river turned green and all of Chicago turned into a bunch of little drunk Irish people.

Saturday started off innocent enough with eggs and mimosas at home before we left to go to a friend’s apartment that was right off the river. On the way to the apartment it was roughly 12:30 p.m. and the streets were already full of far too many drunken idiots. I rolled my eyes at the silly people in their green tutus and their stupidly small leprechaun hats on their heads standing in line for a dumb bar that would take them at least an hour to get inside.

That is until this happened. Once Chris put on the stupidly small leprechaun hat I realized just how fun they really were. I mean what’s not to like about a tiny hat? It’s just funny.

We drank some Guinness, took a few Irish car bombs and by the time 3:30 rolled around and everyone was ready to head to some bars up north to get away from hour long lines of tourists downtown, Chris and I decided we were ready for a late lunch/early dinner. And so we went to our favorite spot in the West Loop, Au Cheval and we feasted our little Irish hearts away.

I casually asked Chris to take a photo of me and this is what he gave me. I assure you I was not as sloshed as I appear in this photo. He liked it because he said “It looks like a great St. Patricks Day pic!” Because I’m wearing green, drinking a beer, and appear to be hammered? Yes, apparently so.

And so we finished our St. Patrick’s Day Saturday at Au Cheval sipping on their amazing Bloody Marys and eating their one-of-a-kind burgers.

This place seriously has the best burgers in the city. Hands down.

And with each Monday brings a new promise to eat healthy for the week. If I make it until Thursday afternoon I’m really proud of myself.

Happy St. Patricks Day, everyone! May the luck of the Irish be on your side today!

Au Cheval sounds amazing. I noticed it was on your list for food you should eat in Chicago if you visit for the weekend. Have you considered updating that list? I would love to hear what else you would include now that it's been a few months.

Ah, I was in Chicago this weekend, too! And totally geeked it up with some green clover antennae (I don't even know what to call them). But haha, yes, the drunken fools were definitely out!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Seriously, one of these times I'm going to make it to the city to see the green river. And perhaps to that restaurant because now I'm starving.

You know what's terrible? I lived in Chicago for three St. Patrick's Days, and not once have I attended the South Side Parade (although I'm not too bummed about that because apparently get murdered there sometimes), nor have I seen the river dyed green. It's shameful, really. But also, kind of my own fault because I hate crowds with the passion of a thousand fiery suns, so I tended to avoid downtown around holidays at all costs. But I do very much enjoy the green river photos you posted. ๐Ÿ™‚

Im Irish and its so funny/interesting to see the american perspective on paddys day ๐Ÿ™‚ and if you ever get the chance to spend St.Patrick's day in ireland do it! ๐Ÿ™‚ ps. to everyone in america it is NOT st.patty's (that is just one thing that annoys every single irish person!)

Anytime you can put a fried egg on a sandwich it is always heavenly. And woah, Au Cheval takes serving their Bloody Mary's seriously! Looks amazing!

Looking very fun and festive! Someone asked me if I celebrate St. Patrick's Day and I really didn't know how to answer. Are they asking if I wear green and get loaded? Or is there another way to celebrate? Looks like you did it right!
