Limited Too Tuesdays- On Setting “Life Goals”

Well friends, it’s time for yet another edition of Limited Too Tuesdays, a post in which I look back through my old diaries to see what middle school me was up to.

Today’s selected entries reflect the importance of setting goals. Like I’ve said many times before, I’m a huge fan of goal setting and always have been. The only problem is that I occasionally confuse “goals” with “dreams.” Is there really that big of a difference though anyway? I didn’t think so either.

Sunday August 12, 2000

Let it be known that these are probably the kindest goals I have ever set in my life. Let it also be known that the pages leading up to this (and the pages following it) are nothing but really really mean stuff about my peers. A normal nice girl doesn’t set a goal for herself to “not be such a snot” or “don’t be so judgmental” if you catch my drift. But hey, at least I got my signature down. Do you see that “Paris Taylor” in there? Yea, me neither… I called myself Paris a lot spanning the years 1999-2002ish. It was a phase.

And one year later I decided it was time to make a few more “set life” goals.

Saturday April 21, 2001 (13 years old)

Of all of these goals, the hardest for me to stomach that I haven’t achieved yet is probably that fact I still don’t know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a (wait for it, just follow the little arrow) tootsie pop. I like that being happy is only number eleven on my list, I want to be famous and go to Hawaii first (obviously.) And on number eight I guarantee you it was supposed to say “go to division one school on basketball scholarship” but I scribbled out “on” and just stopped after school because even at thirteen I knew there was no way in hell that was happening.

As for #12- well Jennev Heng was the fastest mile runner at my school in the west and I just wanted to beat her so bad. We’ve never actually raced, but Jennev if you’re reading this, I’m up for it. I know that you’re in the army now and train every single day and make your body do all sorts of physical things and I pretty much just sit in my house all day writing jokes before I go out and drink beer at gross comedy bars for the night, but like I said, I’m up for it if you are.

Have a good Tuesday, be nice to each other today. You never know who is writing about you in their diary.

TTYL-
Paris

Hah! I loved this post! And I must admit I too have never found out how many licks it takes to get to the center of the tootsie pop. I think we have failed at life.

Practicing your signature is so classic… I think everyone has done this at LEAST once!

Not only do I love that you called yourself Paris (I called myself "Victoria") but I love that you wrote goals like "find out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop"…I'm pretty sure I wrote that exact same goal in my journal. Oh an great advice at the end…you never know who is writing in their diary about you.

Grace Taylor, I hope you win your Academy Award one day and make it to Hawaii real soon

Well goal number one for 13 year old Taylor may be happening quite soon, outside of blog land that is. And you've already written a book so I'd say these goals of yours are closer to reality than dreams. These journal entries are gold. I would really love to see what goals 13 year old me set for myself. I'm pretty sure winning an academy award would be on that list, though I'm no actor so I'm not sure how that would happen.

And did it completely devastate you when you re-read the "live somewhere warm" goal, when you're currently in the middle of a Chicago winter? Sometimes, our younger selves are so wise.

Ohhh Paris. 😉 These are just too fantastic. I have got to get on finding some gems from my journals.. I was such a little dork pants.

I have never been one to set goals, as a child I lived from day to day and never thought about when I would be grown up and school life was to be endured and was never enjoyed

#16. This was this strange kid I knew named Rob in my 7th grade English class, who slowly licked a tootsie roll pop and said officially, it was 728 licks. That number seems strangely high to me.

Also #17. "Live where it's warm". Poor Paris didn't know that stage taylor would be living in the tundra all winter.

    Love this post! So funny!

  19. February 25, 2014 / 9:20 pm

I'm pretty sure at 13 one of my main goals was to be famous as well, although I was pretty sure my route to stardom was going to be through reality television (I really set my goals high).

  20. February 25, 2014 / 10:06 pm

You are too awesome. There is no difference between a goal and a dream, fyi, I mean, just look at you and all!! That #1 goal may not be too far off in your future….

  21. February 25, 2014 / 10:55 pm

Wow you just made me feel old! I graduated high school I 2001 lol

  22. February 26, 2014 / 4:43 am

Wow, you were a driven little lady. I only discovered goals as an adult and even then I battle to write them down!
You still want to live somewhere warm?

  23. February 26, 2014 / 9:20 am

I die, every week. I also like the wear a special robe at graduation besides the obvious tootsie pop one.

Oh and I named my diary "Lacey" after Lacey Charbert in Party of Five… I was really cool I guess.
