It all started with a notification on my phone telling me Chicago was supposed to get pounded with even more snow Saturday evening. I didn’t waste any time in walking down the street to get the necessities to survive a snowstorm: Bloody Mary ingredients and mac and cheese.
When I say mac and cheese I mean lobster mac and cheese. In case you’re wondering, it was delicious.
So I sat with my Mary and my Mac and I waited. Within just an hour or two it looked like this outside.
By the time Chris and I decided we wanted to make root beer floats (because who doesn’t want ice-cream during a blizzard?) our neighborhood was covered in a fresh blanket of snow.
I love how quiet everything seems to feel when it’s under a new coat of snow. I took this photo Saturday evening around 11:00 p.m. and the street was as still as its ever been. It was illuminated with a white winter glow that only Mother Nature can pull off. Even if you’re not a fan of cold weather (like myself) the beauty of last night was undeniable.
We walked to brunch Sunday morning and the snow was still falling and unfortunately so were the temps.
We went to a restaurant by our house called Eleven City Diner. As we sat in our two-person booth with the cute 1950s music playing and snow falling outside I said, “Chris, this moment is just so perfect.” And then he rolled his eyes and told me to stop being weird.
After brunch we wanted so badly to just go home and cozy up on the couch, but Harlow of course had other plans. Having a (slightly hyper) dog in the winter in the city is painful. That’s just the only way I can describe it. Har doesn’t have a backyard so that means we still go on five walks a day, whether it’s 20 degrees or -20.
Because we really didn’t have a choice in the matter, Chris and I put on our ski clothes and decided to take Harlow to the park. We knew we had to be good dog parents and take him out for at least an hour because we know it won’t be happening on Monday when it’s supposed to be -45. And that’s not a joke, it’s really going to be that cold with windchill.
It all started off so well. As you can probably imagine, Harlow loves the snow.
But then Harlow saw him. Which brings me to part two of my post, Harlow vs The Snowman.
“Wait a second. Wait a damn second, that wasn’t here yesterday. What in God’s name is that devil creature? I don’t like this, I don’t like this one bit. I better bark at it for awhile.”
“This looks bad. Identify yourself, devil creature. What are you? Who are you? IDENTIFY YOURSELF!!!!”
“Oh shit, did he just move?”
“I will attack you! Or I will just continue barking. The choice is yours.”
“Okay I’ll sniff, but this feels like a trick. That nose looks like a carrot to me. And I don’t like carrots either.”
“Wipe that smile off your face, this is my park.”
“I don’t understand this one bit. You don’t look like a dog yet you smell heavily of dog piss.”
In Harlow’s defense this was one very menacing looking snowman. And in the end Harlow did what he had to do, he marked the snowman as his.
oh my gosh, the pictures of your dog & the snowman are hilarious! Too funny! And a root beer float sounds amazing right now– could also go for some delicious brunch as well!
Carly
Oh gosh, too funny! I hope Ozzie never encounters a snowman… I'm not sure he could handle the stress! Snow shovels are his main enemy right now.
I am so jealous of you guys having snow, we didn't get any in Germany this year and when I went home for Christmas (England) they hadn't had any there either! Maybe you guys can send some my way?
Gorgeous pictures :).
Hahaha, I just woke my husband up by laughing so hard. Your dog is too funny! Where I live (Georgia) has a chance of snow tomorrow and so I'm crossing my fingers! We haven't seen snow in years. Its just so beautiful. Stay warm!
Harlow just kills me!! I love the his expressions that you capture in every picture!! I hope all 3 of you stay safe and warm. It's pretty cold here in Nebraska, but not as cold as Chicago. 🙁
hahaha this is hilarious!
Its cold here, I know tonight in Nebraska, its supposed to be -12 , and with the wind chill -40, but its really cold there, I wouldn't leave my house or warm bed. x
omg hilarious…but terrfiying about the cold! i lived in NYC for 6 years, just moved back to FL in aug but ive been in NYC since Dec 18 and I swear its been colder while I'm visiting than it ever was when I lived here!! & my boyfriends apartment DOESNT HAVE HEAT…just a space heater in his bedroom. it's torturous!
STAY WARM!
Too funny! Oh Harlow, just being a cautious boy. Protecting his own from a slightly creepy snowman.
Hilarious! Poor Harlow! He just didn't know about that thing on his territory!
Looks like the perfect Saturday, lobster mac and cheese included! I live about 6 hours away in Michigan and I can always tell the snow is coming this way by your posts…and here it is;) Beautiful pics!
Our windchill is supposed to get to -52! A lot of places are {wisely} closing around here. I really regret not training my pup to potty in the toilet so we don't have to go outside! I do agree with you though, there's something calm & magical about a freshly fallen snow! Stay safe tomorrow & stay warm!!

I love how quiet it gets during a snowstorm too! It's my favorite moment and probably why I'll live in the north forever! ahahahahah I was dying at the part with Harlow and the snowman! Something my dog would do!
hahaha this is HILARIOUS!
The only thing I miss about snow is how fun it is to shuffle around in with the dogs! Harlow loooks soo in love with it all. I love it!
I knew that Harlow would win! 🙂
Harlow frolicking in the snow is great. Stay warm tomorrow! We're already hunkered down here in the burbs : )
You are awesome dog parents takings Harlow to the park when its freezing out! and -45!!! I can't even imagine! I complain when its in the 20's here!
Stay warm tomorrow!!!
The snow pictures are so gorgeous! I love when there is a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. That is so funny that Harlow didn't like the snowman at first!
I'm slightly concerned (AKA COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT) for my poor little 7lb dog from Missouri. He's never experienced cold like this. This morning I tried to let him out in the garage but he wouldn't go or do anything. So I strapped him in a doggy jacket Christmas Story style and he went outside. He's fine… but he's been sitting by the fireplace ever since.
hahaha omg i love this. i feel like hugo would do the same thing, but lucky for us it's not snowing at all. or maybe it's unlucky. these pictures make me cold just looking at them. How cool to kind of have the whole city to yourself. i love that feeling.
I'm so glad you let us know exactly what he is thinking/saying. I talk for my animals all the time and it leads to lots of eye rolling. I am the same way…I would have absolutely said "wait stop…let's enjoy this moment it's too perfect"…and then Mark would have said "Okay finish your breakfast". Looks beautiful there! Stay warm!
This just cracked my shit up! Harlow! You are such a funny puppy. My dogs would try to snuggle it. They try to snuggle everything. My Huskie once carried a possum around gently in his mouth for two days and would snuggle it at night. We had to sneak it away from him when he wasn't looking and set it free.
Oh my gawd, that is the most legit snowman I have ever seen! You go, Harlow, you go!
That is one serious snowman! We got snow but nothing like Chicago. Hope you are staying warm and Harlow too! Seamus was too cold and made me carry him home from his walk since his footsie got to cold.
Would had been funnier if Harlow attacked the snowman but seeing how he reacted to it was funny still, snowman have no place in Harlow's park.
Ha! Your dog is seriously the coolest thing. And your captions are perfect. Hilarious as usual!
hahahah that is hilarious! love it!

That's hilarious! You captured everything so perfectly on camera too. Our goldendoodle just turned one year old and that dog is keee-razy about the snow. She literally started jumping for joy when she saw it was snowing outside last week. I'm with you and I hate the cold weather, but I absolutely love the way the world feels after a snowfall–so peaceful and quiet.
HAHAHAHA. Oh Harlow. I dont trust that snowman either. I personally love snow, and I was kind of bummed that we got rain here in Ohio instead. I'm so weird.
