Getting a Call Back

Cast me, I’m poor.
Occasionally I forget when it’s appropriate to joke and when it’s just bad timing. Like yesterday for instance, I was on a call-back for a commercial I auditioned for last week and right at the end I said something I probably shouldn’t have. But can I just ask if that sounded as cool as I hoped it would? On a call-back for a commercial… Because the next part I should add is that the commercial will only be shown on the internet… And there it is, not so cool anymore. But to be honest I was just excited to get called back for anything so whatever.
After I’d read my lines I was schmoozing with the casting directors, for some reason they were super interested in the fact I do stand-up so I was trying to play into that acting like I was Johnny Jokester. It was pretty shameful, but a lot of what I do is so I’m pretty much used to being a circus monkey by now. Right as I opened the door and was about to walk out I added, “I’ll send in the next girl, but I hope she’s really bad.” Elbow jab, joke joke. They both laughed and I felt good about myself and my stupid comment. And then I turned around and saw the next girl was waiting right there, as in just beyond the door that I had opened while I was wishing her bad luck to the casting directors.
“Cool. Thanks,” she said.
Oh shit. This girl was tough looking. Like I’m pretty sure she grew up on the Southside and didn’t take “jokes” from a stupid Nebraska girl like me in my stupid plaid shirt and ankle boots. “I was kidding, I swear. I hope you’re good. I was awful. You’re great. Your skull earrings are great. And your knee high black boots are killer.” So please don’t kill me.
And I mumbled all the way to the elevators as the girl stared daggers into the back of my head. I felt like a real asshole. That being said, I still hope I get the part. It would be my first paid acting gig and that would be nice.
Speaking of nice, my niece Lola Grace asked me to give her a shout out regarding her new fashion onesies, Lola’s Line. That kid is a real go-getter, she’s barely seven months and she’s already following her dreams. I love it. I love it so much.

She said she’s tired of all the same old gimmicky sayings on baby clothes like “sweat pea” and “I love my mommy” and “iPood,” she said she wanted something fresh and new where she can really express herself. So she and I collaborated and came up with this. But it was mostly Lola, I shouldn’t even call it a collaboration really.

I said, “Lola, no one can pull off thigh rolls like you can. So if you’ve got the body you might as well flaunt it in an adorable onesie.” She agreed. She also said you should order one for your baby (boy or girl!) today just in time for Valentine’s Day.

So don’t thank me, thank Lola. Because she just gave you all a great baby gift idea for your best friend or coworker or cousin or maybe even just for yourself if you’re into dolls or something. No judgement here.

Internet commercial or not, a call back is pretty cool regardless. I'm always so impressed with everything you do, improv, standup, giving acting a go. You're a brave girl. Have you ever considered starting an indie team, or maybe they don't do that in Chicago…?

And Lola is such a cutie!

Well that is so nice of you to say! When you say an "indie team" do you mean just starting my own? Because in that case, yes I'm on a few right now. But if this something new I don't know about please share!

Nope, that's pretty much what I meant, starting your own improv team.

A comedian never stops! That's funny- as an actress that other girl should know how to deal with competition. Hopefully you get it!!

Haha yes I thought so too. I think I rattled her!

Okay. Those onesies are literally perfect. And I absolutely love your sweater with a rooster/chicken? (I don't really know the difference…) You look beautiful lady! 🙂

I'm not sure what it is either, let's call it a bird. And it's from J Crew!

That selfie onesie is adorable – too bad I do not have a little girl. About the joke though, that is what it was, a joke!

haha.. I think the joke was pretty epic and it just might have thrown the Tough Girl off her game!

Okay… a call back that's awesome! And as far the girl… she's trying to get into acting… she will live with a few bruises here and there. Hope you get it!! AND more people are on the internet than watching tv… that commercial is a big deal 😉

You probably made that girl so confused that she totally bombed her audition. They'll call you back because you're just plain better. Also, ahhhh cute baby in cute clothes. And end the freak out.

That could totally be my Halloween costume if they were made in adult sizes. Just a onesie and my phone to take selfies.LOL

That's awesome about the callback! I'm sure you planted a seed of doubt in that girl's head so she probably bombed, but either way I laughed pretty hard about what you said 😀
    That onesie is adorable!

I can't wait until you get an IMDB page & it's too full to function.

    I will be ordering that onsie… I’m supposed to be on a spending freeze : ) ..

  12. January 17, 2014 / 5:54 pm

I bet she bombed. i hate when i say something that i don't want others to hear. i get so awkward.

That other girl just has a bad attitude! In my opinion. But I am probably right because if you are rocking skull earrings you probably don't have the brightest view of life. Not that I don't think the world needs girls who rock skull earrings…anyway, congrats on the call back!

Story of my life, I always say the dumbest stuff, that is never funny.
but, this, I find hilarious. If it was me I could say I would have ran out of that room at 1000 miles per hour.

    Gooood luck:)

This is so great! Lauren Gram wrote a book semi autobiographical about when she started acting. I feel like this story could have been there.
